Team Formation , Introduction & Team Rules

Reflection: I went into this week feeling both excited and slightly uncertain. University group projects do not always go smoothly, and I knew that the quality of our team dynamic would determine the quality of our final output. What reassured me quickly was how organised everyone was from the start. Nobody was passive — everyone had something to contribute. Taking on the Technology Lead role meant I immediately started thinking about what stack we would use, what our constraints were, and how to make technical decisions that the whole team could understand, not just developers. That balance between technical depth and team communication became a theme throughout the entire project.

User Research, Personas and User stories

Reflection: As Technology Lead, user personas are not always where my mind naturally goes. I am more comfortable thinking about APIs and database schemas. But this week shifted my perspective. When I sat down to design the backend data model for the FAS, I kept coming back to Gary and Fairy. What data does Gary actually need to see? How quickly does Fairy need to be able to submit? User research made my technical decisions better. The decision to implement Redis for faster response times, for example, was directly motivated by wanting Fairy's experience to feel instant and frictionless. That connection between user need and technical choice is something I now carry into every project.

Teamwork Engagement and Management

Reflection: Managing a team is different from working in one. As Technology Lead, I was not just responsible for what I built — I had to make sure my technical decisions made sense to non-technical teammates, and that I was not pulling the project in a direction that suited me personally but did not serve the team's goals. I learned quickly that engagement is not automatic. Some team members are naturally vocal; others need to be drawn in. I made a point to ask quieter members directly for their views during meetings, especially on technical decisions that would affect everyone's workload.

Five Benefits and Challenges of Working Together

Reflection: • Diverse skills in one team: Having a UX lead, researchers, a technology lead, and presenters meant no single person was stretched too thin. •Shared accountability: Knowing your teammates depend on you raises the quality of your own work. • Creative collision: When different perspectives meet, better ideas emerge than any one person would have produced alone. • Faster problem solving: When I hit a technical question, I could draw on the research team's findings rather than starting from scratch. • Stronger final output: The presentation we produced was better than anything any one of us could have built individually.

The Fundamentals of Creative Thinking and Problem Solving

Reflection: I tend to think in systems — I gravitate toward architecture and structure. This week reminded me that the best technical architecture means nothing if it is solving the wrong problem. Creative thinking is not just for designers or researchers; it is essential for engineers too. The most creative idea I brought to the table this week was suggesting that our system should serve three completely different user types — students, lecturers, and admins — each with their own tailored interface. Rather than building one generic form, we would build three distinct experiences that all fed into the same data layer. The team adopted this and it became one of the defining features of our approach.

"Edgar was the backbone of our technical direction. Whenever we had a question about how something would work in practice, he had a clear, well-reasoned answer. What impressed me most was his ability to explain technical decisions in a way that everyone in the team could understand and get behind. He made sure the technology served the users, not the other way around."

"From a documentation perspective, Edgar was a pleasure to work alongside. He kept his work well-organised and communicated changes clearly, which made it much easier to keep our records accurate and up to date. He also contributed ideas beyond his own section — always thinking about how the pieces connected across the whole project. A reliable and thoughtful team member."

Alexandra Marcu Documentation Lead & Presentation

Great Services!

Edgar took ownership of the technology side completely, but he never made it feel like a closed door. He was open to questions, patient with explanations, and always willing to adjust his approach if it did not align with what the personas needed. His presentation slide was technical but still easy to follow — a hard balance to get right."

Good Services!

"Working with Edgar showed me how research and technology should connect. He actually read through our research findings and used them to inform his technical decisions — he did not just build what he wanted to build. When I told him that students valued speed and simplicity, he came back the next week with Redis implemented for exactly that reason. That kind of responsiveness made the collaboration feel meaningful."

"Edgar brought a level of professionalism and technical depth to the project that really elevated the whole team. He was always prepared for meetings, always had progress to show, and was genuinely collaborative — never making others feel excluded from the technical side of things. His contribution to the presentation was one of the strongest sections."
